Staff at European School barricade themselves inside

Several dozen staff members at the European School in the Brussels borough of Ukkel barricaded themselves inside the property for over an hour on Tuesday out of fear that dangerous burglars had entered the school.

Several burglars fled into the school when they were being pursued by the police. The police believed that they were dangerous. In the event police were able to apprehend only one person. At least one other is still being tracked down.

Gwen Moerman is a pedagogical adviser at the school: "A police helicopter circled above the European School for the entire duration of the operation. Police officers also made their way into the school and its grounds. One person was detained in a school building. We lived in fear for over an hour because of what was happening outside."

Nobody was injured during the police operation.
