Bad luck for Tom Boonen as veteran Vinokurov takes it

Belgium's Tom Boonen has not been able to give Belgium a medal in men's road race in cycling. Both Boonen and his main rivals, Mark Cavendish and André Greipel, missed the decisive breakaway. It was Kazakhstan's Alexandr Vinokurov who took the gold. Boonen suffered a puncture in money time, some 10 km before the finish line.
Vinokurov caught Uran off-guard in the final sprint and won it with ease.
  • Cycling: in the men's road race, Jurgen Roelandts took 7th place, coming 5th in the sprint of a big  breakaway group. The group was 8 seconds behind the two riders who battled it out for the victory: Vinokurov and Colombia's Rigoberto Uran Uran, who took the silver.
  • Swimming: Ward Bauwens set a new Belgian record in the men's 400 individual medley. However, his personal best was not enough for a place in the final.
  • Rowing: Tim Maeyens qualified directly for the quarter-finals in the single sculls, winning his heat. He also set an Olympic record time: "But this doesn't give me any guarantees on a ticket for the final."
