More breathing space for Standard

In football, Standard de Liège cruised past newcomers Waasland-Beveren to take their first victory of the season. The win was a relief for Standard, as there were question marks behind the club's recent performances. Waasland-Beveren only picked up 1 point from their first 3 matches.
Standard have more breathing space after the first win of the season.

Standard missed out on European football last season, and can concentrate on the domestic competition. However, things didn't go too well for the "Rouches" or "Reds" as the Standard players are dubbed.

The pressure was on for new Dutch coach Ron Jans: only a win would do in the home match against newly promoted Waasland-Beveren. The visitors climbed 0-1 ahead though, but Luis Seijas equalised before the break. In the second half, Standard were lucky when an own-goal by Waasland's Bas Sibum put them in front. A penalty converted by Nacho Gonzalez did the rest, 3-1.

The pressure is off and Standard have some more breathing space, at least for the time being.
