Walem leads under 21’s to victory in Dunfermline

The Belgian under 21’s football team’s new coach Johan Walem has got off to a flying start. Walem’s youngsters enjoyed a 1-0 victory in a friendly against Scotland’s under 21’s in Dunfermline on Tuesday evening. The first half ended goalless. However, ten minutes into the second half Sporting Anderlecht’s Ziguy Badibanga scored Belgium’s winning goal.

Badibanga was only called-up by Walem on Monday to replace Standard de Liège’s Michy Batshuayi.

Belgium’s under 21’s will play their last two qualifying matches for the 2013 European Under 21’s Championsships on 6 and 10 September against Norway and Iceland respectively.

Although qualification is still a mathematical possibility, it is highly unlikely. Belgium is currently third in Group 8 with 8 points; Norway is second on 13 points and England lead the group with 15 points.

Only ten group winners and the four best second-placed teams make it into the play-offs for a place among Europe’s top 8 under 21’s teams.
