Foreign drivers targeted during police checks

In Antwerp, police has held road checks stopping no fewer than 673 cars with a foreign number plate. Police officers wanted to check whether the motorists didn't have any fines that were still unpaid (archive photo).

Car drivers who still had to pay an old traffic fine, had to cough up the money on the spot, in cash. Police collected 5,445 euros. The action was aimed at sending a clear signal that drivers from abroad will not escape any traffic fines.

Police held the checks between 8 and 11 a m. at the Antwerp Binnensingel. Most fines involved speeding and jumping the red light.
