Bruges dolphin calf dies

The baby dolphin that was born at the Boudewijn Sea Park in Bruges on Monday has died. The calf had appeared to be healthy and had been suckling well. Nevertheless the baby dolphin dies unexpectedly on Friday afternoon. Attempts by its mother, dolphin trainers and a vet all failed.

Dolphine Roxanne gave birth to a male calf on Monday 3 September.

The first three weeks are crucial in a dolphin calf’s development as its immune system is still very weak.

Despite great care having been taken and the calf having been placed under around the clock observation by the dolphin trainers and keepers, the calf has died.

The trainers spotted that the baby dolphin had stopped swimming early on Friday afternoon. Mother Roxanne tried to save her off-spring by bringing him to the surface so he could get air.

The trainers and the vet also did all they could to save him, but it was too late.

An autopsy will be carried out to ascertain the exact cause of death.
