Ghent clamps down on Roma families

The city authorities of Ghent (East Flanders) are taking action against a group of Roma families that have settled in the Muide district. Local residents have complained about brawls, excessive noise and burglaries. On Wednesday city officials meet local residents to decide what concrete action will be taken.

Burgomaster Daniël Termont (socialist) says that there have been series problems with three Roma families in the Muide area for several months now:

"The three families are at loggerheads with each other and it sometimes comes to blows. Neighbours speak of vandalism, theft and the like."

"There have been several complaints and they are serious enough for us to provide a serious response and solve the problem. It's getting out of hand. We have to act."
