Belgium has a world champion

After taking a bronze and a silver medal, Belgium's Bart Swings has claimed a gold medal at the World Roller Speed Skating Championships in Italy. The 21-year-old from Herent (Flemish Brabant) outsprinted Italian and French opponents to take the gold in the 20 km road race (elimination).

The World Championships are taking place in Ascoli Piceno, in Italy. A number of track races are followed by outdoor road races. Bart Swings took 5 medals at last year's Worlds in South Korea, and also started with big ambitions this year.

After taking a bronze and silver medal on the track, it was bull's eye for the Belgian on the first day of the road races. Swings, nicknamed "The Flash", applied the  right tactics, keeping a low profile during the race, in order to emerge as the winner in the final sprint. The youngster beat Italy's Fabio Francolini and Frenchman Alexis Contin into second and third place respectively.
