Club Bruges had to win in front of their home crowd and after the humiliating 4-0 defeat at Bordeaux on the first day of play. The match against Maritimo Funchal, a Portuguese club from the island of Madeira, didn't have too many chances but it was in-form Carlos Bacca who once again broke the deadlock for Bruges. The Colombian striker fired home the 1-0 after 56 minutes (photo). How long will Club Bruges be able to keep their player, insiders are asking.
The Belgian striker Björn Vleminckx doubled the lead 20 minutes from time. Club are now back in business in Group D, where Newcastle United have the lead with 4 points. Bordeaux and Bruges have 3 points, Maritimo have just 1.
Genk throw away double lead
In other action, KRC Genk gave away a 0-2 bonus in Basel, Switzerland, to concede a 2-all draw. Genk were left with mixed feelings, also because one of the two late Swiss goals came after a disputed penalty phase.
Still, Genk still lead Group G with 4 points, ahead of Videoton (Hungary, 3 points), FC Basel (2) and Sporting Portugal (1).
