Antwerp shooting incident probably act of retaliation

A member of the public was shot dead in the street in broad daylight in Antwerp on Thursday. The incident happened in the vicinity of the Crowne Plaza Hotel not far from the Antwerp orbital ring road. The judicial authorities told a press conference that the incident can be linked to the criminal underworld.

The incident happened in the Gerard Le Grelle Avenue in broad daylight, shortly after noon yesterday. The victim, a 34-year-old man, was reanimated at the scene, but died shortly afterwards.

The police say that the suspects drove off in a light coloured car and disappeared without trace. According to press reports, the car was found in Turnhout (Antwerp), but police could not confirm or deny this.

The judicial authorities told a press conference late yesterday that the incident can probably be linked to street justice retaliation in the criminal world.
