Crisis looming at Standard

In football, Standard de Liège lost the derby against Mons on Sunday evening. The former champions are further adrift now in the standings, the Dutch coach Ron Jans is starting to feel the pressure despite beating Anderlecht earlier this month.
Frustrating times for Standard coach Ron Jans.

The first division only has 3 Walloon teams compared to 12 Flemish teams and one from Brussels (Anderlecht): RAEC Mons, Sporting Charleroi and Standard de Liège.

For Mons, the home leg against Standard is one of their matches of the season. The team of coach Enzo Scifo, a former Belgian international, won the derby 3-1 yesterday evening and this was bad news for Standard, which just can't find its best form this season. Standard are presently only 12th in the rankings, while they aim for the top-6 at least. The team even had title ambitions in September.

Standard, also dubbed the Reds, became the Belgian champions in 2008 and 2009, but gradually sold their best players over the past seasons. Midfielder Marouane Fellaini, now at Everton, is only one name on a long list. Other names include Steven Defour (Porto) and Axel Witsel (Zenit), all of them Belgian internationals.
