Coalition reaches accord on 2012 budget

The Federal Cabinet has reached an agreement on the modifications to this year’s budget that will be necessary if the 2012 deficit is being kept below 2.8%. In order to do this the Di Rupo government had to find 811 million euro.

Speaking on Tuesday evening, Prime Minister Elio Di Rupo (Francophone socialist) said that people wouldn’t feel anything of the savings as they consist of technical measures such as scrapping certain planned expenditure in the areas of social security, defence and the railways.

"We have-double checked all income and expenditure and with a view to achieving strict budgetary control, revised our estimations using the latest available figures.”

The government was helped in its task be the lower rates of interest we currently have to pay on our national debt.
