Flemish exports to the US up by a third

Flanders is exporting more and more goods and services to the United States. During the first month of the year our region’s exports to the US were up by over 30% on the same period last year. The figures come from Flanders Investment & Trade (FIT). Exports from the chemical and pharmaceutical industries are the motor behind the increase. In cash terms, Flanders’ total exports to the USA amounted to 12 billion euros during the first eight months of the year, a percent increase of 31.5% on 2011.

Total Flemish exports between 1 January and 31 August amounted to 194.8 billion euro, an increase of 3.34 on the same period last year.

Meanwhile, Flanders imported a total of 192.4 billion euros worth of goods and services during the first eight months of the year, an increase of 0.70% on last year.

As well as the United States, our region also saw a big rise in exports to China (+15%), Russia (+27.35%), Brazil (+ 20%) and South Africa (+14.33%).

However, it’s not all good news as exports to India were down 12.4% on the same period last year. During the first eight months of the year, Flanders was good for 83.25% of Belgium’s exports.
