5 die as minibus plunges into the sea

Five people have died after the minibus they were travelling in plunged into the sea at Zeebrugge docks in West Flanders. The emergency services managed to save one person that was in the minibus. He is now being treated for hypothermia in a local hospital.

The victims are all builders that were working at the docks. The accident happened at around 8pm on Thursday evening.

The search and rescue operation was hindered by difficulties locating the wreckage. The bodies of a total of five men were eventually fished out of the icy cold waters of the dock.

The accident happened on the New Yorklaan, a part of the docks that is not accessible to non-dock traffic. The exact cause of the accident is not yet clear. The judicial authorities have launched an investigation.
