5,314,820 electronic payment transactions

As expected, a record number of electronic payment transactions were made in Belgium on Saturday. The last weekend before Christmas is traditionally very busy in the country’s shops and supermarkets. According to figures released by the company that manages Belgium’s network of credit and charge card payment terminals, no fewer than 5,314,820 payments were made on Saturday.

This equates to almost one payment for every man, woman and child living here.

The record-breaking figures for 22 December 2012 are 8.96% up on the previous record that was set on 23 December last year.

They were peaks as high as 10,000 transactions a minute both in the morning and the afternoon. The absolute peak of 10,908 transactions came at 11:50am. However, this is not an all-time record.
