The win was Club Brugge’s first in Liège since 2004. Club Brugge now moves up to third place in the table.
Standard turned up the heat from the start. Odjidja and Larsen blundered in the Club Brugge defence, leaving Ezekiel (photo) free to put Standard one up in the first minute of play.
Club Brugge looked out of sorts, while Standard continued to push forward. Only some good work by the Club Brugge keeper Kujovic prevented Standard from extending their lead.
However, it must also be said that Standard squandered chances and were sometimes also unluckily with their finishing.
Club gradually came back into the game and a couple of good saves by Kawashima were required to prevent Lestienne from bringing the West Flemings level. The Club Brugge coach made a couple of key substitutions during half time, bringing in Vazquez (bottom photo) and Refaelov for the second half.
This proved to be a wise move as it was a great pass by Vazquez that set Lestienne free to score the visitors’ equaliser on 52 minutes. Although Club Brugge took command, Standard’s came close to going 2-1 up on a couple of occasions.
Despite Larsen having brought down Standard’s Ezekiel inside the box, no penalty was given. Seconds later, Vazquez once again set Lestienne free in front of goal and it was 2-1 to Club Brugge on with 13 minutes remaining.
In an exciting climax, Standard had a couple of chances to salvage a point. However, it was not to be and Bacca’s injury time goal for Club added insult to injury for the home side.
Club Brugge’s win sees them move up to third place in the league with 38 points from 21 games. Standard is fifth with 35 points.
