Belgian fighting for his life in Lille

A 22-year-old Belgian is fighting for his life in a French hospital following a brawl in the northern city of Lille. Police are questioning a 24-year-old local man suspected of attempted manslaughter.

French newspaper reports say that the suspect has admitted he was involved in the incident, but is playing down his role.

The Belgian is said to have been kicked full in the face. He is now in a coma and in intensive care in a French hospital. Lille prosecutors say that the Belgian responded to a call on the social networking website Facebook to gather outside a restaurant in the northern French city in order to celebrate the result of a soccer match.

Three die in Tournai

Meanwhile, at home in Tournai (Wallonia) three French nationals have been killed when the vehicle they were travelling in ended up underneath a truck. The accident happened on Christmas morning. The youngsters aged 16, 18 and 28 were all dead at the scene.
