1,000 fare-dodgers caught in Brussels

Over a thousand fare-dodgers were caught during massive checks across local transport services in Brussels on Thursday.

28 people were detained including 16 undocumented people.

In all some 250 police officers and security officers working for the Flemish and Brussels local transport companies De Lijn and the MIVB took part in the coordinated operation. In total 16,000 passengers were asked to produce a valid ticket.

Drugs and weapons too were recovered.

The operation was staged in order to deter fare-dodgers and pickpockets and to make people feel safer on local transport in the capital.
