Women's Day discounts were discriminatory!

Friday was International Women's Day, but unique initiatives by the DIY chain Gamma and the rail company Thalys came in for some stick. The two companies offered discounts to women yesterday, but the Institute for the Equality of Women and Men has already investigated several complaints.

In advertising literature Gamma offered female DIY enthusiasts a 20% reduction on the occasion of Women's Day.

The Institute for the Equality of Women and Men says that the discount is discriminatory and has already contacted the chain. Gamma changed its advertising but maintains that the discount was not discriminatory.

The chain now says that the advert contained a mistake. It did refer to the full conditions on the Gama website and there it was made clear that the discount was also available to men.

International rail company Thalys offered women tickets that only cost 8 euros. Here too the Institute for the Equality of Women and Men speaks of discrimination as men could not benefit from the promotion.

Thalys refused to change its offer. The Institute for the Equality of Women and Men is now looking at legal steps.
