Last night was an exciting one for football enthusiasts across the land as no fewer than eight matches were played.

For fans of Beerschot the gods had a disappointment in store. Beerschot lost away at Waasland-Beveren and has been condemned to play in the play-off III competition. The Antwerp club face an arduous task if it wants to avoid relegation to League Division Two. Beerschot lost Saturday's match 3-2.

Beerschot will play Cercle Brugge in play-off III and if successful will have to play against three second flight teams to stay in League Division One.

Lierse fans can breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to a goal from Bourabia and after a long season of hard travail it beat Kortrijk at home to take the 14th spot and snatch a place in play-off III.

Anderlecht beat KV Mechelen at home 1-0 restoring some of the confidence dashed by its recent defeat by Zulte Waregem and its elimination from the Belgian Cup.

Zulte Waregem are now six points adrift of the reigning champions after Club Brugge won their fixture 2-1 away.

Standard de Liège thrashed OH Leuven 4-0 away.

Lokeren took the sixth and final place at the head of the First Division after it drew at home against Charleroi.

RC Genk seemed on course for defeat at the hands of AA Gent, but came from behind to triumph 3-2 at home.

Cercle Brugge suffered a humiliating 3-1 defeat at home at the hands of Mons. It was Cercle's 21st defeat of the season.
