American nanny gets 4-year prison sentence

A 32-year-old American nanny has been given a 4-year prison sentence by a court in Bruges. She was also ordered to pay 7,500 euros in damages to the victims in a case of assault and battery. The nanny had abused twin babies.

The case goes back to June 2011, when the nanny maltreated baby twins from Knokke-Heist (West Flanders). The twins suffered several fractures, including wrist and ankle fractures.

The Bruges judicial authorities quickly targeted her as a suspect, but despite this she managed to escape to her home country. In the United States, she committed a similar aggressive act. Two weeks ago, she was sentenced to a suspended prison sentence of 5 years in the U.S.

The accused was not present in court when the Bruges judges announced the verdict. However, Belgium will probably ask the U.S. for the nanny's extradition.
