The Belgian child sex killer Marc Dutroux is serving his prison sentence in Nivelles. Inmates are allowed to have videos and DVD's, as long as they are original versions and not copies. This measure was taken to prevent that information would be passed on. At the same time, the videos are being screened, but the checks could have missed their purpose.
The Nivelles judicial authorities are now investigating how the video tapes reached Dutroux. A couple of years ago, he was caught with child porn videos in his cell. He had collected the footage from his files and put them on his computer.
An investigation has to find out whether this latest footage was collected in the same way, or whether they came from outside. "In the first case, we would be relieved, but in the second case, we would have a major problem. It would mean that the security procedures concerning Marc Dutroux have failed", sources within the prison say.
Marc Dutroux is Belgium's most notorious paedophile and child molester. He was apprehended in 1996, but his trial only took place in 2004. Dutroux was convicted of having kidnapped, tortured and sexually abused children. Normally, he will have to spend the rest of his life in gaol.
