More compensation paid out for damage due to poor roads

The poor quality of Flemish roads is often a subject of comment. Now it has emerged how much the Flemish taxpayer has to pay to compensate people for damaged resulting from the bad state of the roads.

Last year the Flemish authorities forked out 652,133 euros in compensation. The figure is up 30,000 euros on the year, but the overall number of claims is down.

Flemish Transport Minister Hilde Crevits (pictured in the digger): "Despite the fact that people are more informed about how they can file for compensation, the number of claims is down. This could suggest that the situation is improving, albeit slowly."

Ms Crevits conceded that the overall number of claims remained high.

Last year 1,611 claims were filed. There was a pay-out in 610 instances.
