Club Bruges stunned in Poland

In football, Club Bruges suffered a shock defeat in Poland in the Europa League. Standard de Liège did manage a win in the first leg of their qualification match for the fourth round, in Greece.

Club Bruges, last season's numbers 3 in the Belgian league, started as the favourites against Slask Wroclaw in Poland, but lost the match 1-0, a goal by Sebino Plaku of Albania on 64 minutes. The hosts were the better team, but Bruges goalkeeper Matthew Ryan kept it to 1-0. Bruges will have to score at least once in next week's return match before their home crowd (photo: Bruges players disappointed after the match).

Standard de Liège, last year's number 4 after winning the European play-off match against AA Gent, had to travel to Greece to play Xanthi. Standard took it 1-2. Defender Laurent Ciman scored the winning-goal 20 minutes from time to give Standard an excellent result.

The third Belgian team in the Europa League, Cup winners KRC Genk, only enter the competition in the next qualifying round.
