Buffaloes win first league game in new stadium

Sunday was something of a special day for AA Gent. The Buffaloes played their first league game in their new home, the Ghelamco Arena. KV Mechelen had the honour of being the first team to take on AA Gent in a league match at the new stadium.

The KV Mechelen Coach Harm van Veldhoven had two attackers (Mokulu and Prodell) in his starting line-up. They were given back-up from Destorme in an attacking midfield position. AA Gent relegated Van der Bruggen to the bench, while Arzo was in the starting line-up.

The Buffaloes took charge early on but were unable to create much danger in front of goal. The first on-target shot of the game came from KV Mechelen’s Mokulu (photo).

AA Gent had the lion’s share of possession, but was unable to create chances. The home side went behind on 25 minutes after a blunder by Boeckx.

The AA Gent keeper dropped a Prodell cross allowing Mokulu to slip the ball into goal on the far post. The half ended 1-0 in Malinwa’s favour.

Late winning goal

The second half saw AA Gent draw level on 55 minutes when Mboyo headed home from an El Ghanassy free-kick.

After the equaliser, the match took a turn for the worse. However, this didn’t dampen the spirits of the Buffaloes’ fans.

Their support was rewarded when Diogo (photo) made it 2-1 to AA Gent just two minutes from time.

Just before the final whistle KV Mechelen’s David Destorme was given his marching orders for his second bookable offence of the match after a foul on Boeckx.

AA Gent has 4 points from 2 games while KV Mechelen still has to pick up its first points of the 2013-14 season.
