Flemish air quality among the worst in Europe

Air quality in Flemish cities is among the unhealthiest in Europe and it's above all children that are footing the bill. The environmental organisation BBL is among a set of organisations that plan to take action to reduce air pollution in Flemish cities.

The BBL's Erik Grietens insists that each and every Belgian is losing out on a full year of healthy living as a result of air pollution. Children come down with the common cold far more easily and are more vulnerable to infections of the airways and pneumonia.

Air quality in Brussels, Antwerp and Ghent is among the unhealthiest in Europe. Traffic is the main cause. Several organisations are now putting pressure on the authorities to act.

In Brussels and Antwerp protest pick nicks are planned and in Ghent residents are hanging white sheets out of their windows to make particulate matter visible.
