Duvel Moortgat in American beer deal

The Puurs-based brewery Duvel Moortgat (Antwerp province) has taken a stake in the American Boulevard Brewing Company. The deal allows Duvel to strengthen its position on the American beer market.

Boulevard Brewing Company was founded in 1989 in Kansas City, Missouri, by John McDonald, a man with a great passion for beer. The company had a steady growth and is at present the 12th biggest producer of special beers in the United States. It boasts 150 employees and a 40 million dollar turnover.

Duvel Moortgat noticed the success and has now acquired a stake in the American brewer. However, John McDonald will keep his seat in the Board of Directors as a minority shareholder. It has not been revealed how much the deal is worth.

The deal allows Duvel Moortgat to strengthen its position on the American market, which was already solid. Since 2003, Duvel Moortgat has been selling its brands Duvel, Achouffe and Liefmans in the U.S. Duvel Moortgat already owns the Ommegang brewery in Cooperstown, New York, where some 100 people are working.
