Clamp down on Facebook gambling

Belgium's gambling watchdog, the Games of Chance Commission, has plans to address the growth of games that involve gambling on social networking sites like Facebook. The organisation says that it's mainly youngsters who get involved and often they do not know what they are getting themselves into.

"We see more and more young people getting involved in games of chance without really knowing what they are doing." The watchdog's Peter Naessens says that his organisation wants social gaming to be treated in the same way as other games of chance: "We also notice that most of these youngsters go on to other forms of gambling."

The watchdog is pressing for special rules for online gambling. A quarter of all gambling now happens online. Turnover in Belgium is estimated at 100 million euros.
