Standard back on top

Standard de Liège has reclaimed pole position in the Belgian First Division after a 1-0 win away at AA Gent. A goal from Batshuayi was enough to leave AA Gent with just 4 points from 8 games and without a win under their coach Mircea Rednic.

In a sloppy opening stage that was voided of chances, Standard had the lion’s share of possession.

Batshuayi found the back of the net, but his effort was correctly disallowed for handball. AA Gent’s first chance came on 20 minutes when El Ghanassy sent Privat in deep. However, Privat’s header went over Thuram’s goal.

Standard’s Ezekiel was brought down inside the box and the Dutch referee pointed to the spot. However, Mpoku’s penalty kick hit the post.

Standard pushed forward, but the AA Gent keeper Padt was on his toes. El Ghanassy reacted with a long range, but to no avail.
AA Gent’s good intentions were shot to pieces 10 minutes from half time when Nahayo’s shot from outside the box made it 1-0 to Standard. The visitors almost two-up straight away, but Mpoku’s shot hit the post.

AA Gent’s Pedersen suffered a similar fate at the other end.
AA Gent pushed forward at the end of the game, but it was too little, too late.

The home side ended the game with ten men after Nahayo was given his marching order for his second bookable offence two minutes from time. Standard tops the First Division with 33 points from 14 games. AA Gent is 10th with 15 points.
