Stricter rules for renting out rooms in Brussels

Renting out guest rooms on a private basis in Brussels will become subject to stricter rules. The Brussels Region has approved a Decree that imposes a number of obligations on landlords. Those that are not complying with the new rules, risk fines between 250 and 25,000 euros.

The number of people renting out a room or apartment in Brussels on a private basis is estimated at some 5,000, and it's growing every day as it is becoming a trendy way to earn something extra.

The Brussels regional authorities are now imposing new rules. Those renting out a room should register at their municipality, the extra income has to be reported to the taxman and they will have to comply with safety standards. Those flouting the new rules, risk fines between 250 and 25,000 euros.
