Bemba lawyer detained at airport

A Brussels solicitor currently working for Jean-Pierre Bemba, the leader of the Congolese opposition group MLC has been detained at Zaventem Airport near Brussels. Jean-Pierre Bemba is currently on trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague. The French press agency AFP reports that the solicitor Aimé Kilolo Musamba and the MLC representative Fidèle Babala Wandu have been detained on suspicion of having tried to influence witnesses.

AFP was contacted by the MLC spokesman Germain Kambinga with news the men’s detention on Sunday morning. Mr Babala Wandu was detained at his home in the Congolese capital Kinshasa on Saturday night. The International Court of Justice had issued the arrest warrant.

Mr Musamba is reported to have been arrested at Zaventem Airport, near Brussels when he returned from a foreign trip. The Federal Judicial authorities told the Belgian press agency Belga that they have “no information” about Mr Musamba having been detained.

Jean-Pierre Bemba is currently on trial at the International Court of Justice in The Hague for crimes against humanity and war crimes that his militia committed in 2002 and 2003.
