Standard in command despite embarrassing performance

In football, Standard reclaimed first position in the Belgian top flight despite an embarrassing performance against bottom-of-the-table RAEC Mons. Club Brugge made the most of the defeats of title challengers Anderlecht and Genk to jump to 3rd place.

One goal did the trick for Standard, as Mons were downed 1-0. A thundering shot by Julien De Sart (photo), which was deflected, was one of the few highlights for Standard fans. They booed their team after the final whistle.

Lokeren were beaten by Club Brugge, 0-3. Lokeren were the better team in the first half, but missed the opportunities while Club Brugge were very efficient. Goals by winger Maxime Lestienne and striker Tom De Sutter put Bruges 0-2 in front at the break. Belgian veteran midfielder Timmy Simons added another one from the penalty spot late in the match, as Lokeren couldn't find the strength to fight back.

Leaders Standard are 2 points ahead of Zulte Waregem. Club Brugge are 4 points behind, RC Genk 5, Anderlecht 6 and Lokeren 11.
