An evening full of surprises

In football, the round of 16 of the Belgian Cup saw many surprises on Wednesday evening. Anderlecht, Club Brugge and Standard all suffered a shock defeat and were ousted. It was a frustrating evening for Anderlecht, that were knocked out by second-division Westerlo through penalties.

Anderlecht only managed to drew 2-2 at Westerlo (1-1 after 90 minutes and 2-2 after extra time). It was winger Massimo Bruno who managed to wipe out a Westerlo lead at 2 occasions. In the penalty shoot-out, Anderlecht had the chance to deal with their penalty stalemate once and for all. However, it was exactly the opposite that happened, as Westerlo eventually came out on top 8-7. To make things worse, it was striker Aleksandar Mitrovic, one of the most expensive Anderlecht transfers ever, that missed the final one (photo).

Club Brugge were ousted by neighbours KV Kortrijk in the West-Flemish derby: 1-0, a goal by Croatian striker Ivan Santini. Standard suffered a surprise exit in Bruges, where Cercle confirmed their Cup reputation taking it 1-0.

Last season's Cup winners KRC Genk won after a last-minute effort at KV Mechelen, a thundering rebound shot by Hyland on 90 minutes. AA Gent, Lokeren, KV Oostende and Zulte Waregem were also through.
