Berlare gunman apprehended by police

In Berlare (East Flanders), police managed to arrest a man who had barricaded himself in his house around 11 p.m. on Wednesday. This was confirmed by Berlare Burgomaster Katja Gabriëls (liberal).

The man barricaded himself around 7 p.m. in his dwelling in the Warande area, in the centre of the municipality. The man was armed and threatened to commit suicide. It was believed he had too much to drink.

Two women that were present in the house, including his girlfriend, were able to escape the scene unharmed. Meanwhile, police had their hands full dealing with the incident. Several roads were blocked and around 9 p.m. a special police intervention unit arrived.

The suspense finally ended around 11 p.m. when the man was apprehended. Mayor Katja Gabriëls did not give any details about the operation, but said that nobody sustained injuries. The Dendermonde judicial authorities also refrained from giving any further comments on the case.
