Decomposing body retrieved from River Schelde

The body of a man has been recovered from the River Schelde in the town of Temse (East Flanders) after a bargeman alerted the emergency services by telephone when he saw it drifting between the hamlet of Steendorp and Bornem.

Fire-fighters attended the scene to locate the body and ensure it did not drift off. Maritime police and officials from the public prosecutor's office were called in to investigate the matter.

First reports suggest that the body had been in the water for a number of weeks.
