Man stabbed seven times on Halle Market

A member of the public is fighting for his life after being stabbed seven times on the market square of the town of Halle, just outside Brussels, on Sunday. A suspect has been detained. The victim is receiving treatment in hospital.

It is understood that suspect and victim first both visited the De Kelt public house in the town and then made for the market square. The two men rowed, but it's not yet clear what the argument was about.

The victim is 31 years of age and hails from Braine-le-Comte in Wallonia.

Police were soon able to identify the assailant and he was detained by a police patrol in the town of Sint-Pieters-Leeuw. He faces attempted manslaughter charges. The suspect is known to the police service that is refusing to provide any further details in connection with the stabbing. The victim has not yet been able to speak with the police. Officers have taken evidence from other witnesses.
