Incident closes Antwerp to Ghent rail line

There will be no train services on the Antwerp to Ghent railway line this Friday afternoon. Frédéric Petit of the company responsible for Belgium's rail infrastructure Infrabel says that this is due to an incident between Beveren and Sint-Niklaas (both East Flanders)

"Just before 11am an accident involving a person occurred at Nieuwkerken-Waas. Currently no rail traffic is possible between Beveren and Sint-Niklaas".

Trains between the two cities are being diverted via Dendermonde (East Flanders) and Mechelen (Antwerp province), lengthening journey times by around half an hour. Mr Petit added that it was clear when the line would reopen.

Around 120 passengers on the train that was involved in the incident will continue their journey on replacement busses.
