The Flemish asparagus season has already started!

The mild winter with continuing above-normal temperatures was good news for Flemish asparagus growers. The asparagus season has already started, at least for vegetables grown in greenhouses. Heating costs for hothouses were down, but prices are mainly determined by the law of supply and demand.

Heating costs for hothouses were down 30 to 40 percent on a normal winter. However, this does not necessarily mean that asparagus prices will be down, because this mainly depends on the balance between supply and demand.

The good news only applies to asparagus grown indoors. Outdoor plants haven't benefitted from the mild winter. It remains to be seen how the weather in March develops to draw any conclusions there. But in the meantime, you can already go the shop and enjoy some delicious winter asparagus!
