Return of new American ambassador postponed

The American ambassador to Belgium, Denise Bauer, will only return to Belgium around mid-June, a statement by the American embassy in Brussels said. The decision was taken on medical grounds, after Ms Bauer underwent an operation.

"U.S. Ambassador Denise Bauer underwent successful surgery in California in January to remove a benign tumor. Her doctors expect a full recovery. However, they recommend that she continue her recovery in California, postponing her return to Brussels until mid-June", the statement says.

In a message to Embassy staff, Ambassador Bauer said: “While I will not be physically in Belgium for President Obama’s visit on March 26, I have every confidence that the visit will be a tremendous success and I will certainly be with all of you in spirit at this important moment in our relationship with Belgium.”

In her absence, Deputy Chief of Mission Mark C. Storella serves as Chargé d’Affaires ad interim.
