KRC Genk back to square one

In football, KRC Genk started Play-off 1 with a home defeat against Zulte Waregem. In Play-off 2, it was a bad day for ambitious AA Gent, who lost their opening match against Ostend. At the bottom of the table, OHL kept their hopes alive to stay up.

KRC Genk just managed to make it into Play-off 1, taking 6th place in the league. However, as fans were hoping for a new start in the play-offs, it was back to square one for the Limburgers as they completely missed their start, suffering a 0-3 home defeat against Zulte Waregem. "We need more time", newly-arrived coach Emilio Ferrera said as he can't seem to get the team back on the rails. In Play-off 2, AA Gent disappointed yet again. Before their home crowd in the new Ghelamco Arena, they failed to move past KV Oostende. Things got even worse for the Buffaloes when Ostend climbed ahead through a free kick early in the match, eventually holding on to this bonus until the very end: 0-1. Ghent have 5 more matches to wipe out this disappointment and try to win their group. In the other match in Group A, Waasland-Beveren downed Lierse 2-0.

In Group B, Kortrijk whipped Cercle Brugge 4-0. KV Mechelen receive Charleroi later tonight. The two group winners will face each other in a play-off match at a later stage.

In the battle against relegation, OH Leuven beat Mons 2-0, moving one step closer to avoiding direct relegation.
