Are the Walloon pandas really both females?

The daily La Dernière Heure today reported that shock reigns at the Pairi Daiza animal park in Wallonia now that it has emerged that the two pandas that the animal park has on loan from China are both females.

Of course this is April Fool's Day, but it is a good joke.

Belgium has been somewhat obsessed by the pandas long before they even set foot on Belgian or even Walloon soil and their advent has triggered a number of inter-community rows. Wouldn't the pandas be better off in Antwerp Zoo in Flanders and why oh why did they need a police escort to get to Pairi Daiza in the first place?

Anyway, like in Scotland hopes are high that the pandas will procreate and we will soon hear the pitter patter of baby pandas. La Dernière Heure would have us believe that the only prospect of this would be if the pandas adopt - after all this is Belgium!

The daily quotes Pairi Daiza's director saying: "This is unprecedented!" The paper also brings good news for the people of northern Belgium. Pairi Daiza is staffed by people of good will and from 25 May onwards - Election Day - the Walloon park will loan out one of the pandas to Antwerp.

Closer to home our parent website is encouraging Flemings to phone in their question to Barack Obama. President Obama will soon be back in Belgium for the upcoming G7 meeting. The questions will be selected by Ms Claudia Claes of the Flemish Institute of Eloquence. Your calls are eagerly awaited on 070 22 41 14.
