"Changes to Brussels flight plan on Friday"

The Belgian Secretary of State for Mobility, Melchior Wathelet, has given instructions to ensure that the flight routes used over Brussels by planes from Brussels Airport are modified from Friday onwards. Belgocontrol, the traffic control agency that is charged with aviation safety, is normally obliged to follow these instructions.

The flight distribution plan that Mr Wathelet introduced last February has been widely condemned. On Monday the Brussels regional government decided to take action in the courts. In response the Mobility Secretary extended the flight ban at night and reduced the number of flights over the northern outskirts of Brussels.

The Flemish deputy premiers in the federal government have condemned the move. They say that Mr Wathelet's action has no validity in law. The Brussels environment minister says that the corrections are insufficient and that the Brussels government will continue with its actions in the courts.
