Bossut to join Belgium’s World Cup preparations

The Belgian National Football Team Coach Marc Wilmots has invited the Zulte Waregem goalkeeper Sammy Bossut to join the Red Devils’ preparations for the forthcoming World Cup in Brazil. Bossut will replace the Sporting Anderlecht goalie Silvo Proto who injured his arm during his club’s match against Sporting Lokeren on Sunday afternoon.

Proto had been tipped to be Belgium’s third goalkeeper in the World Cup squad if Hoffenheim’s Koen Casteels wasn’t fit in time for the World Cup. Casteels is currently recovering from a broken leg.

However, with Salvo Proto now also injured, Marc Wilmots needed a third keeper to join the national team’s preparations for Brazil. The Red Devils start their World Cup preparations in Genk today.

Our national team will play a friendly in the Limburg town against Luxembourg on Monday 26 May. Marc Wilmots’ men will then leave for a weeks’ training in Sweden. Belgium’s first World Cup group stage match is on Tuesday 17 June against Algeria.

“A fantastic opportunity”

Speaking after learning that he had been selected, Sammy Bossut told the Zulte Waregem club website that "This is a great opportunity that I will seize will both hands. However, I will remain calm and realistic."

"I will have to cancel my holiday, but that is something I’ll do with pleasure."
