Bridge jumping: new neck and nominate craze in Ghent

There is growing concern in the East Flemish capital about a new craze that involves people nominating friends to jump off a bridge in Ghent. The craze is inspired by the online drinking challenge neck and nominate.

Manuel Gonzalez, the spokesman for the Ghent police force, has issued a warning: "The game may seem innocuous, but is not without danger."

The craze has also surfaced on Facebook. Participants jump off the Snepkaai Bridge and then nominate somebody who faces the challenge of repeating this exploit within 48 hours.

The police warn that apart from being particularly dangerous, jumping off bridges in the East Flemish capital is illegal. In Belgium people are only allowed to jump off bridges when a special notice has been put up. In Ghent no such notices have been erected.
