Supply teacher accused of sexual abuse

The local authority in Turnhout (Antwerp province) and the judicial authorities haven't ruled out the possibility that a 26-year old supply teacher detained on suspicion of having sexually abused a 6-year old pupil may have abused other children in his care.

News that the teacher from the local authority run Parkwijk School in Turnhout had been detained on suspicion of having sexually abused one of his girl pupils broke on Sunday.

At a press conference the judicial authorities and representatives from Turhout Council said that they were investigating whether the teacher had abused other children in his care.

The 26-year old supply teacher was detained on Saturday. He was questioned by an examining magistrate on Sunday after which it was decided that he should remain in custody.

At a press conference held on Monday morning, the Judicial Authorities' Spokeswoman Dominique Reyniers told journalists that "We are currently investigation one complaint made by the parents of a girl in the first year class. However, we are of course considering the possibility that there may be more victims".

The teacher also taught in two of the primary schools other campuses. Information sessions are being held on Monday for parents of each at all three of the Parkwijk Primary School's campuses.
