The match got off to a furious start with a great chance for Standard's Igor De Camargo and something of a war being fought out between AA Gent's Neto and Standard's Mpoku.
The visitors we able to keep the heat turned up the longest and this was rewarded with a Depoitre goal on 16 minutes.
The goal came after the Standard keeper Kawashima had made what can only be described as a miraculous save from a Lepoint header only to see Depoitre score from the rebound. AA Gent remained the better team and Standard only began having chances again much later in the game.
With Watt, Carcela, Bia and De Sart all injured, the Standard Coach Guy Luzon had few if any options to try and change the run of play through substitution. However, Ajdarevic was brought in for the second half in the hope of turning the tide.
Standard gained more possession and created chances. Their best chance of the second half fell to De Camargo after a poor back pass by AA Gent's Gershon. However, an alert Buffaloes' keeper Sels (photo) prevented the Brazilian-born Belgian from scoring.
The match ended as it had begun; with plenty of tough tackles. A dirty tackle by Standard's Marquet on AA Gent's Raman went unpunished and AA Gent's Neto can think himself lucky not to have been a red card. The score remained 1-0 in AA Gent's favour.
