22 million needed to pay police force

The Head of the Federal Police Service Catherine De Bolle says that the police is no longer able to function properly. “Due to the freezing of our budget, we can’t adhere to our legal obligations”, Ms De Bolle told the dailies ‘De Standaard’ and ‘Het Nieuwsblad’.

Ms De Bolle has calculated there will be a 22 million euro deficit, money needed to pay Federal Police officers. This calculation is based on the expenditure during the first five months of 2014 and was sent, accompanied by a note, to the Interior Minister.

She fears that the budget cut will lead to a reduction in the of Federal Police’s effectiveness. Ms De Bolle states in 'De Standaard' and 'Het Nieuwsblad' that they have tried everything to meet their 2014 needs, but can’t adhere to their legal obligations due to the freezing of their budgets.

In the note addressed to the Interior Minister, she proposes a couple of solutions to the budgetary deficit, such as: slowing down recruitment, freezing cooperation between federal and local police services and restricting overtime.
