Number of Belgians living abroad reaches record high

The number of Belgians living abroad has reached a record high this year, according to the ‘Sudpresse’ dailies. 403,641 Belgians are registered abroad, a rise of 6 per cent compared to last year. The largest part lives in France.

The exact amount of fellow-countrymen living beyond the borders is even higher if we take the Belgians who haven’t officially registered abroad into account, totalling 461,516 emigrated people.

The grass seems to be the greenest is France. Almost a quarter of all emigrated Belgians, or roughly 121,000 people, prefers to live there. France is followed by The Netherlands, Spain and Germany.
The United States – in fifth place – is the first non-European country where Belgians emigrate to.
