There’s something fishy about frozen shrimp

Apparently, bags of frozen shrimp are being tampered with. According to a report in tonight’s episode of the VRT consumer affairs’ programme Volt, it is very easy for importers to falsify the weight of said bags.

Besides the gross weight, the net weight of the shrimp - after the removal of the ice – needs to be specified on the packaging. The ice can account for 800 or 500 grams. The amount does not matter per se, as long as the consumer knows exactly how much was added.

For the Volt feature, a reporter visited an international fish trade fair. She assumed the identity of an importer and asked suppliers whether it was possible to lie about the added weight by adding more water. The result can be viewed below.
