It's becoming a dark October for Anderlecht

Defending champions Sporting Anderlecht ran into their first defeat of the season in the Belgian football league yesterday. They were beaten by Standard before their home crowd in Sunday's classic, 0-2. Standard are enjoying a resurrection under their new coach.

Anderlecht hadn't lost a single match in their previous 11 league matches, and also had the best defence with only 10 goals swallowed. Standard however have the momentum under their new (interim) coach Ivan Vukomanovic, who replaced the flamboyant Guy Luzon only a week ago.

The match was quite balanced, but it was clear that Anderlecht found it really hard to create any goal-scoring opportunities. Standard kept things under control and accelerated twice in the final 10 minutes of the game to take it 0-2. Anderlecht retain the lead, as their closest challengers Club Brugge and AA Gent drew in the battle of Flanders.

Anderlecht suffered another blow after the late home defeat against Arsenal last Wednesday (1-2). The month of October leaves them with only 2 goals in 5 matches and 3 defeats and 2 draws (no wins). The Brussels club only managed to win 3 of their last 10 matches (photo: Anderlecht striker Cyriac shows his disappointment).

In other action, Sporting Lokeren drew 2-2 at Moeskroen-Péruwelz. Lokeren, who ousted Hull City in the Europa League play-offs, keep their place in the top-6.
